Oil on Canvas

The inclination to collect original artwork is neither ludicrous or snobbish. Nor does it require extreme wealth. That is to say, a good original painting can often be gotten for less money than a furniture store print. You can also buy investment grade art with less money than you might imagine. Too, window shopping for artworks can be a heck of a lot of fun.

The would-be buyer needs to do a little reading, set expense limits, and only buy what appeals to the buyer's eye, because the chances of buying and selling at a profit are rare.

It is also helpful if your occupation requires you to travel, especially abroad. Better yet, get a job where your employment mandates living overseas, and your employer will pay to ship your belongings home. You would be surprised by the number of job descriptions that read that way.

Away from the homeland, you will often find artwork at a quarter to a third of the cost in your own country. That is to say a Dutch painting in an American gallery might sell for $2000.00. In Holland, a roughly identical painting, by the same artist could be had for $500.00. Which brings up a good point, buy directly from the artist whenever possible, gallery markups are legion.
