well.

Fred landed two blows to Arete’s ribs, which the cop felt. Return blows to the thug’s mid section were not showing a whole lot of results. Shoved up against the wall by the other’s body weight, he hammered on Fred’s shoulder with the yawara stick. The big hunk wrapped one hand around the cop’s throat, and commenced banging Arete’s head against the building. But he got carried away, not turning his body to one side as he should have. Arete kneed him in the balls hard - then, peeling himself off the side of the building, grabbed the doubled up hood by the ass and ram the thug’s head into the wall. It was not enough to knock the guy out, but it staggered him. Then the other wiseguy pulled the gun.

From the far end of the alley a horn sounded, lights flashed and a yellow van sped down the narrow passage. Antonio spun around and fired four shots at the on rushing juggernaut before he

dove for the alley wall where the others had already fled. The bullets did not slow the van, nor seem to penetrate the windshield where three of the four had struck. A mere few feet from where fight started the driver stood on the brakes. The van slid into the thugs’ car - smashing one headlight, and pushing it backward several feet.

Antonio let off two more shots as he scrambled over the car’s hood to the driver’s side. Fred stumbled past him, barely getting in the back before Antonio threw the car into reverse. With screeching tires he backed out of the alley, tearing the unclosed rear door off its hinges and leaving it crumbled up and rocking to-and-fro on the alley pavement. As Namtar’s soldier’s beat a retreat, the van also backed out, noisily - leaving the battered Arete and Janus thankful but mystified.
