Prologue

After the explorers had passed,
the seekers followed.

The diamond’s icy fire beckoned many to the south of Africa.

The alluring green of the emerald drew a different lot to the jungles of Brazil.

Still others swarmed to Ceylon seeking the white starred, blue sapphire.

But the boldest, and the greediest of the seekers came to Burma - in search of the
Pigeon Blood Ruby.

Children, May 1926

The place was New York City. The street was tree lined. Young foliage fronted rows of newly built brownstones. The Tromp family resided at 305 East, Apartment 1A. Within, Anna Tromp was introduced her visiting brother, the Amsterdam gem merchant, to her eight year old son.

"Henry, this is your uncle Sharett, come all the way across the ocean to see us."

The visiting kin offered a hand; his face smiled, his eyes were curious, he had a strong but accented voice.

"Hello Henry."

Henry, at that shy, awkward age, ignored Uncle Sharett’s hand, peering down at the new shoes pinching his toes.
